An elderly resident who suffers from a Neurological Disorder and is also a wheelchair user began to choke during meal time. Staff responded quickly delivering BLS protocol which unfortunately failed to dislodge the food stuck in his airway. The gentleman started to turn blue due to lack of oxygen. Staff quickly grabbed their LifeVac ACD from the wall mounted box which they had purchased a week prior. Within seconds LifeVac was used and dislodged the obstruction saving the gentleman’s life, making a full recovery. He was sent to hospital due to receiving BLS protocol and was given the all clear.
Last week a research study was peer reviewed and published in Resuscitation Plus by Elsevier. This study was carried out in the medical school at Warwick University, UK. The randomised crossover trial compared LifeVac to the abdominal thrusts – LifeVac to Dechoker and Dechoker to abdominal thrusts. Testing efficacy (success rate and usability). LifeVac had a 99% success rate in removing the FBAO (Foreign Body Airway Obstruction), Dechoker had a 74% success rate in removing the FBAO and abdominal thrusts had a 71% success rate in removing the FBAO. Participants also found it easier to use LifeVac. You can read more about the peer reviewed publication here
