How to help a choking child
- Recognise the signs: Identify signs of choking in schools, such as difficulty breathing or coughing.
- Assess the situation: Determine if the child choking can speak or cough to try to clear the blockage. If coughing fails, start performing abdominal thrusts. If the person choking has a disability or has a condition which prevents BLS Choking Protocol – proceed immediately to step 5.
- Call for help: If the choking persists, call emergency services, place them into the recovery position and prepare to use the LifeVac device.
- Perform abdominal thrusts: Administer abdominal thrusts if the person is conscious and unable to dislodge the obstruction through coughing or spitting.
- Deploy LifeVac®: In cases where traditional methods fail or are unavailable, use the LifeVac® anti-choking device as a last resort to remove the obstruction and save a life safely.
Important: After any choking emergency, check if the person affected is injured, conscious and no longer in any danger.
