On January 30th, 2025 an 87-year-old female with Dementia in Ireland choked on a Roses sweet causing a complete airway obstruction.

An 87-year-old female was enjoying time with friends within a Day Care Centre in Cork, Ireland, when she choked on a Roses sweet. This caused a complete airway obstruction. Nurses quickly intervened delivering back blows and attempted abdominal thrusts. Abdominal thrusts proved to be hard to perform due to the clients mobility issues.
LifeVac was then retrieved by a nurse named Orla. LifeVac was then applied while the casualty was in a sitting position. On the 3rd applications LifeVac dislodged the Roses sweet, helping save the clients life.
“LifeVac saved this clients life. When you have clients who have Dementia and can’t always follow directions (such as stand up), have poor mobility, or are unable to stand, then abdominal thrusts may not be effective. As a result LifeVac is a lifesaving device.” – Orla
Two of LifeVac Europe’s Directors, Matt Banagan and Marie Boland, had the pleasure of visiting Cork this week to personally hand deliver the replacement LifeVac. During this wonderful visit they had the pleasure of meeting Orla and Matt provided a small refresher training session for Orla’s team.
